FAQ about Vanpooling

What is vanpooling?

Vanpooling is a group of seven to fifteen people who commute together on a regular basis in a leased van. One person normally drives the van and is responsible for maintenance of the leased van, while the riders share the monthly fee to lease the vehicle from 3rd party vanpool companies such as Enterprise Vanpool or VPSI. Eligible participants may receive up to $100 per month vanpool subsidy if they participate in the CSUF Vanpool Program.

Is vanpooling right for me?

Vanpooling isn't for everybody. It works best for commuters who drive long distances, work fairly regular hours, don't mind the company of others and want more of a commitment than a carpool. Vanpooling is one of the best ways to cut smog and help our environment. The average car spews a quarter-pound of pollution each mile it is driven. On a single hundred mile commute, 25 pounds of pollution contaminate our air! When twelve people ride in a vanpool instead of driving alone, 11 cars are not used. One vanpool cuts 275 pounds of pollution every day!

Why should I vanpool?

You can save a great deal of money by vanpooling, especially if you have a long commute. If you drive the van you save even more, and usually you have use of the van on weekends. You can also leave the driving to someone else when you vanpool. Imagine using your commuting time more productively? Read the newspaper, jot down notes for your morning meeting, chat with your fellow riders, or even catch a little sleep. You'll arrive on campus on time, relaxed and ready to start the day! Additionally, there's no way to measure the stress you avoid when someone else fights the traffic for you. When you don't have to worry about finding a parking spot or repairing wear and tear on your car, getting to and from campus can be almost enjoyable!

To find a vanpool, visit Enterprise Vanpool. CSUF Vanpool formation meetings are held once potential riders from a specific area have been identified. If you feel vanpooling is for you, contact Transportation Services. If you vanpool to campus, you may be eligible for numerous benefits and incentives. For a brief overview of incentives you may receive, please see the CSUF Vanpool Program page that describes each incentive in detail.
