Parking and Construction Projects Update – Spring 2004

As the spring 2004 semester rapidly approaches I want to alert you to what you might expect when you drive and park a vehicle on campus and to update you once again on the impact of major construction projects this spring semester.

The campus typically experiences the highest parking demand during the first four weeks of the semester, and this semester will be no different, there will be challenging times ahead in the spring semester when it comes to finding convenient parking.

Student Parking Actions Effective Spring 2004:

  1. Assisted (or stack) parking in lots A, B, E and G will continue. This allows an additional 900 -1,000 cars to park on campus every day.

  2. Additional new spaces have been provided throughout campus by re-striping and reconfiguring parking spaces in lots A, E and on campus roadways.

  3. Daytime student semester permit sales will be closely monitored to maintain a manageable level of spaces-to-permits sold ratio. This reduces the number of permit holders who are vying for the same space during peak hours.

  4. Students may buy discounted bus and train passes. For free bus service anywhere in Orange County, the University has partnered with the OCTA to accept the TitanCard as an OCTA bus pass,

  5. Reserved parking in lot E is provided for student carpools.

  6. We encourage walking and biking to campus whenever possible.

  7. DISCONTINUED ACTIONS: Complimentary parking and shuttle bus service from the Fullerton Spectrum Club and the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, for students, faculty, staff and visitors, has been discontinued.

Faculty and Staff Parking Actions and Options Effective Spring 2004:

  1. Restriped lots gained + 95 parking spaces.

  2. Parking at the Marriot Hotel top level of the parking structure (90 spaces available).

  3. Eligible faculty and staff can buy discounted bus and train passes. In addition, the University Pass program allows faculty and staff to use their TitanCard as a bus pass on any OCTA line.

  4. We will continue to use approximately 100 spaces in lot C for as long as possible. This lot may have to be turned over to the Performing Arts contractor during the semester; we will make every effort to provide sufficient notice prior to turning the lot over to the Performing Arts contractor.

  5. Faculty/staff parking in any student lot is allowed with valid parking permits.

  6. Faculty/staff parking permits are valid after 6:00 PM, Monday – Thursday, in 30 minute visitor parking spaces.

  7. DISCONTINUED ACTIONS: Complimentary parking and shuttle bus service from the Fullerton Spectrum Club and the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, for faculty, staff and visitors, has been discontinued.

Construction Projects Update:

Construction of the 102,000 sq. ft. Performing Arts Center located just west of the existing Performing Arts building began in March 2003 and continues on pace for completion in late summer 2005. As a result of this project, and as many of you already know, West Campus Drive has been permanently closed from the Titan Student Union to the Science Laboratory Center. Motorists should use State College Boulevard or East Campus Drive for north/south vehicle travel. Service vehicles can gain access to MH, PA, SLC and Central Plant via the new service road located just west of SLC. Directional signage for pedestrian travel is located at the perimeter of the construction sites. Construction on another important west side development project, the Nutwood parking structure, continues at pace. This structure is one of two new parking facilities currently planned for the campus. The Nutwood parking structure is scheduled to be open for parking in the fall of 2004 and will offer 2,500 convenient parking spaces.

As noted in previous communications, these construction projects generated a short term inconvenience to the campus which resulted in the displacement of over 1,300 parking spaces. To mitigate this impact we instituted a number of parking options in the fall of 2003. We have modified these options for the spring 2004 semester given actual experience and current conditions. Combined, these parking options make it possible to park 1,400 more vehicles on campus. In addition to the parking options, alternative transportation programs provided for faculty, staff and students provides relief during this period of major construction.

You can find more detailed information and maps regarding the construction projects and parking plans posted on the CSUF Parking & Transportation web site www.parking.fullerton.edu and the CSUF, Design & Construction web site http://d-c.fullerton.edu. Periodic updates will be provided on these web sites, the Daily Titan, Dateline and through a variety of other publications and methods.

Should you have questions, regarding the parking situation, please email your questions to parkingassistant@fullerton.edu. If you have questions related to the West Side Campus Development construction, please contact the Design & Construction office at extension 2352 or visit their website.

As previously indicated, the time period from September 2003-September 2004 offers a mix of challenges and exciting opportunities for the campus. I ask for your continued patience and cooperation as we go through this period of campus growth.
