- SUBJECT:
- Fall 2004 Parking Update and the Nutwood Parking Structure
The fall 2004 semester is about to begin and for the first
time in many years students, faculty and staff will have more
parking spaces available to them than they have in the past.
The new Nutwood Parking Structure will open on Monday, August
23 adding 2,500 parking spaces to our inventory. As the fall
semester has drawn near some of you have asked me questions
regarding the Nutwood Parking Structure. Hopefully, this memo
answers those questions and a few more regarding how the structure
fits into the parking system, its design features and operating
plan.
Nutwood Parking Structure Safety and Security Measures
The structure contains 2,500 spaces on five (5) levels, four
covered levels and one uncovered upper deck. The main vehicle
entrance is located off State College Boulevard, via the former
access road to old lot D. A second entrance is located off
of Nutwood Avenue, through Lot C. Stairwells, accessible from
each level, are located at each corner of the structure and
next to the main entrance. The elevator tower, located at
the north-east corner across from Performing Arts, has four
elevator cabs and serves all five levels. Most all of this
will be relatively self evident once you have parked in the
structure a couple of times.
The structure was designed with consideration for personal
safety and general ease of use. The overall principal applied
by the architects and engineers with regards to personal safety
is the idea of open lines of sight. This overarching idea
affects everything from the building structural design, natural
and lighting design to vehicular circulation patterns.
Each level of the structure is a large, unobstructed flat
parking area with the ramps to various levels located on the
south side of the structure. The unobstructed flat parking
areas allow for excellent sight lines throughout the facility
making it easier to see pedestrians and vehicles and to find
a parking space. Another feature is that the interior of the
structure is painted white, which increases the amount of
light in the garage. Linear light fixtures are used to evenly
distribute light, including the areas around parked cars.
Large area lights illuminate the entire roof level to eliminate
any ‘dark’ areas.
The frosted glass façade along the north side of the
structure will be naturally illuminated during the day and
artificially lit at night. This brings more light into the
structure and helps people orient themselves towards the elevator
tower and main entrance.
Emergency blue phones, which connect directly to the University
Police Dispatcher, are located on all the levels by the stairwells
and at the elevator lobbies. Parking services officers and
University Police will be routinely patrolling throughout
the structure.
Parking in the Nutwood Structure
As a reminder I want to reiterate what type of parking is
allowed in the structure.
- Student semester, faculty/staff “non-restricted”
semester and annual parking permits are valid in the structure,
7am – 10pm, Monday through Thursday, 7am – 5pm,
Friday (our normal permit enforcement hours).
- Daily parking permits are valid in the structure after
6:00 PM only.
- Invited guests - Daily parking permits purchased in advance
using the Parking Services Permit Request/Pro system on-line,
will be valid in the structure, (see below for more details).
- Disabled parking spaces are located on each level
adjacent to the elevator lobbies. Please note: a valid CSUF
parking permit and DMV disabled persons’ placard must
be displayed in cars parked in any campus space designated
for the disabled.
The structure’s ramp system is designed so that motorists
can reach the upper levels quickly without driving through
each level. From the main entrance at State College, motorists
will have access to the ground floor and be directed to the
ramps with access to the second and fourth levels. From the
Nutwood Avenue entrance, motorists will immediately take the
ramps with access to the third and fifth levels. It is possible
to drive through each level using the structure’s ramp
system. However, to minimize congestion and delays during
the first few weeks of the semester, parking officers will
be controlling traffic flow and circulation within the structure.
Event Parking and Daily Guest Permits Valid in the Structure
Please contact Michael Pruitt, Permit Program Coordinator
at extension 3087 for information about arranging parking
in the Nutwood Structure for campus events. Daily guest parking
permits that are valid in the structure may be ordered on-line.
Visit the parking website at www.parking.fullerton.edu
and select the “Permit Request/PRO” tab and follow
the instructions for ordering guest parking permits.
I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank the
campus community for their patience during the temporary parking
space shortage on campus while the structure was being built.
If you have any questions regarding the Nutwood Structure
operating plan, please contact Parking & Transportation
at extension 3082 or visit their website at www.parking.fullerton.edu.
